PRIDE vs UFC

So I am a big fan, if you haven't noticed, of all of the mixed martial arts leagues out there. Some people don't know or understand the differences between these 2 organizations and the people who do know them tend to argue about which one is better and why.

HISTORY

UFC -
The Ultimate Fighting Championship began in 1994, I was lucky enough to be there in Denver when they began, and is basically responsibly for brining MMA to the US and is now making strides to bring it mainstream. The original format was tournament style where if you were to win the championship you would have to fight more than one opponent all in one evening. Back then there was also no time limit and no rounds. By changing to a 1 fight per night format and going to a system with timed rounds, along with some other changes, the UFC has gained more acceptance in the US and is continuing almost every week togain popularity and acceptance.

PRIDE -
PRIDE Fighting Championships began in 1997 and is held in Japan. PRIDE also holds a 1 fight per night format in their Bushido (meaning "way of the warrior") series. PRIDE also holds tournaments over several months to crown a champion in the different weight classes. This style of tournament typically brings 1 fight a night until the last 4 people are determined. In the last round fo the tournament there will be 2 fights and the winner of each will fight on that same night to be declared the champion.

Similarities -
Although both are reffered to as "no holds barred" fighting they each have some rules. Eye gouging, head butts, small joint manipulation (fingers/toes), strikes to the groin or back of the head are all not allowed in either organization. They also do not allow the fighters to hold the ropes/cage at any time. Both organizations have weight classes. (this is not a complete list of rules but you should get the picture.)

Differences -
The 1st and most notable difference between these organizations is that the UFC uses and Cage in the shape of an octagon and PRIDE uses a traditional looking boxing ring. Because of this difference the UFC does not allow kicks to the head or knees to the head of an opponent who is on the ground. A fighter can be pinned against the cage with no give in it and a stomp or kick to the head could result in serious injury. Since PRIDE has ropes the kicks are allowed. Although this is legal in PRIDE they do not allow it if the opponent is face down and in a defensless position. The UFC uses 3, 5 minute rounds for a non-title fight and 5, 5 minute rounds for a title fight. PRIDE uses a 10 minute 1st round followed by 2, 5 minute rounds. UFC is scored just like boxing with judges awarding a score in each round, PRIDE judges give 1 final decision at the end of the fight stating who they feel won. (again, this is not a complete list but those are the big ones.)

What do I like about.....

UFC - The UFC is the big show, they started it all here in the states and I believe on a general level that they bring the best of the best of American fighters. I like the idea of the cage, it has a modern day gladiator feel. They have much better marketing and are begining to branch out to cable television through SPIKE TV and their new reality show.

note - I stated that UFC has the best of American fighters. They allow anyone to fight but the big name international guys seem to go to PRIDE.
Although currently the Heavywieght Champ is Andre Arlovsky, not from the US.

PRIDE - I believe PRIDE has the overall best fighters. A quick glance to the UFC roster will show you a majority of Americans, quick glance on PRIDE's roster will show the opposite. PRIDE uses a red card system for no action. Basically, if the fighters are stalling for any reason in the referee's opinion he will issue a red card, when that happens the fighter loses 10% of his money for the fight. This definately makes for some great fights. I think PRIDE is a little slower to offer another fight to someone who doesn't entertain the crowd with action.

Overall Summary -
You know I like them both. That said I enjoy the show that PRIDE puts on just a little more. They tend to have a little more action and the crowd seems to get into it a little more. It's no secret that martial arts fighting is more accepted in Japan than the US. It's like the difference between college and pro football. UFC is the big show and has the big names, if you love MMA you gotta watch it. PRIDE brings lesser known fighters (here in the states anyway) and tends to have a little more action and excitement.

I agree with you in regards to PrideFC. I watch both, and certainly the UFC has more "fluff," but that doesn't impress me. A true fan of MMA sees beyond that, which I can see you do (as do I). I have more respect for the PrideFC, but watch both religiously.

how is the UFC the "big show"? from what i understand Pride pays thier top fighters WAY more, and way more people follow Pride throughout the world.

i love the UFC but they need to start putting up much larger purses.

i also miss the tournament format, which did exist in the early days of the UFC. bring that back zuffa!

dude you gotta be kidding me.
UFC is the big show?
nobody outside the united states gives a crap about ufc.
pride has the best fighters around, period.
i dunno about you people who don't know a thing besides what goes on in your hometown, but on the international level PRIDE OWNS

I agree. UFC in my opinion CAN NOT even compete with pride. Pride gives you the MMA fights pure and uncut, no gimmick, no commercial, just straight up for the love of the sport. And the fans are great! much better fighters....ect (you name it, prides got it). I love UFC also because im a MMA fan, But it simply CANT compare on a world wide scale. PRIDE4ever

I look at it this way. To become a successful fighter in either show, you need to be in the top 1% of fighters out there. Once fighters of that caliber are put up against each other, the winner is decided by how they capitalize on small imperfections of their opponents defence. First off, this is why you see titles being held on to for breif periods of time (excluding Vanderlei Silva who's not human), and second, this is why if Pride fighters went up against UFC fighters, you would see competitive matches. I think that it is only a matter of time before you see Pride vs. UFC matches. Sure Pride has more people watching it worldwide than any other MMA, but the UFC has rooted itself in the US market which is the largest single market period. I bet in 5 years the purses will be the same, and Pride will be synonimous with UFC.

someone said no one likes the ufc outside the US, thats just not true, over here in the UK we get the ufc on every night 7 days a week, TUF once a week and all major events the day after you guys get them. pride on the other hand as far as i know has no such presence over here, the only reason i even know of it is because of royce gracies appearances. ive seen a bit of pride now and i still prefer the ufc, i think allowing kicks and knees to downed opponents makes winning to easy and less technical. either way i would watch both if i could.

UFC fighters (mostly Americans) have the bigger mouths, that's for sure. When you look at PRIDE you don't see the egos and big mouths you see in UFC. I liked the UFC in the beginning, but it has degraded to the point that it has a reality show (ensuring that I will never watch it again). In the match-ups I have heard of, the UFC fighters have lost more than they have won (Royce Gracie and Shamrock have tried PRIDE). The caliber of fighters in PRIDE is just much higher than those in the UFC. I would love to see more matchups between the two - I mean, boxers fight everyone, why don't these guys?

12:33 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wanderlei Silva came from the UFC to dominate in Pride as did Phil Baroni. Bottom line Fedor is the best of both organizations, and after that mostly you have even matchups. PS: Matt Hughes vs. Dan Henderson should be the fight to end this arguement.

mr. pc is an idiot and a racist, all japanese fighters punch like girls? and u cant use one example of phil baroni to defend the whole ufc. i like both ufc and pride, but u should think before u say ur biased opionions fucking idiot

does everyone forget that the big bad "ice man" Chuck Liddell fought in the pride 2003 middle weight series and got his ass kicked? don't get me wrong, he put up a good fight, but prides format seemed a bit much for him.

MR PC, you are the classic american asshole who believes americans are the best at everything, tsk tsk tsk, UFC is thirsty of talent, a lot of noobs with no technique, just brawlers, that are dying to get noticed at all costs, PRIDE on the other hand is a more mature organization, serious and true to the fans, with much superior and finer fighters than the small-time punks at UFC, those american fighters, at least the majority of them, have been handed their asses in japan, can't believe how people even begin to compare UFC to pride, it's just ridiculous.

I love all these anonymous crap talkers, if you are going to talk crap go ahead, but put a name to it.

UFC is full of people with no talent???? That makes you sound like an idiot. Probably wouldn't have much of an argument if anyone says Fedor is the best heavyweight out there, he is. But Silva and Liddell would be a great match up. I think the UFC would have the advantage with Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes against anyone, and Hughes may very well lose to St Pierre in the near future. After that you still have BJ Penn at 170. I think PRIDE has the dominant 155ers with Gomi and a couple others.

Chuck Liddell getting his ass kicked???? I do remember him losing a fight to Rampage, no shame in that. I seem to see a couple of highlight reel KO's from Chuck being in a PRIDE ring also. And, to compare Chuck of a couple years ago to Chuck today is a huge mistake, he's a much different fighter.

Whew, glad that's over with. Now that this 1 fight is over we finally know that everyone in PRIDE would beat everyone in the UFC in 50 seconds.

No wonder people don't put their names up when they have jackass comments like that one.

Very dominant performance by Anderson Silva, love to see him take a couple more fights and then fight Franklin.

I respect both the UFC and Pride but honestly UFC as the real fighter.....its like this bitches...UFC is like the NFL, the guys that cant cut it in the big leauge fly overseas and play in the NFL Europe(Pride)like Phil Baroni...-UFC uses much smaller gloves too so the hits are harder, I dont know wut Silva is thinkin gettin into the ring with Chuch Liddell, hes gonna get knocked the fuck out mark my words, he's not even on Chuck's caliber, we all no wut happend last time Silva fought in the UFC..im not sayin Pride doesnt have talent, but UFC is more stacked with it....I'd like to see chuck liddell fight CroCop that would be a good match, cro cops got the insane left kick but i think liddells a better striker

oh yea and too gooklee.. Rich Franklin would fuck destroy silva......Franklin might even beable to beat the Iceman if he moved up into the light heavyweight division

12:18 PM

Pride definatley has the better fighters, not to say that UFC doesnt have there share of great fighters. Pride definately would dominate in the heavywheight devision with fighters like Fedor and Crocop. In the light heavyweight devision again I would say Pride edges out the UFC with the exeption of the Iceman. I would say Franklin is the best middleweight, but after him all the other UFC middlewights are shit, so again I'm gonna have to give it to pride. Now in the welterweight class I'm not to sure. I think Hughs is the best welterweight but Henderson in not to far behind.
PS CroCops gonna be the next Pride absolute champ and then go on to defeat fedor when they fight again(by headkick)

From what I've seen of Pride, they have good fighters and crappy fighters, with little in between. I've seen several fights there where one guy seems good, but the guy he is fighting can't even manage a simple closed guard or any takedown defense. It makes you wonder how good the "good" guy is, when he is beating up on someone with no skills. BTW, Pride has more fluff. Those entrances look straight out of professional wrestling. I'd like to see some fights between the top guys from both organizations though.

I'm an American. And while I love the idea of an American being the top fighter in the world, it's simply not the case. UFC is great because its generating American interest in MMA. But once most people really get into it, they soon realize the stark differences between UFC and PRIDE fighters. I respect both organizations, but you would have to be blind not to recognize the superiority of the top PRIDE fighters over that of the top UFC fighters.

Finally, not all Americans throw racial generalities around like fucking Nazis. Calling that fascist fuck a "typical American" is just as retarded. Don't be a hypocrite, and don't think that every American is a racist piece of shit.

The racists are just louder on these blogs because no one in their own country will listen to them.

I am a fan of the sport because it it stands on its own merits and it offers the viewing public an alternative to the debacle that boxing has become. Unfortunately, money will determine the fate of each organization. The passion that each of you exhibits for your points of view is admirable but be realistic and take a moment to consider the future. The debate has been jumping between organizations based on the talent pool. If history has shown us anything it's that loyalty is not the driving consideration with team/organization affiliations; money is. The very arguments you all make today could possibly be the same arguments your proponents use tomorrow when money changes the face of the sport and fighters follow the payday. The better of the organizations will currently and in the future therefore be the one who can and is willing to "pay." We've already seen this take place in every other major sport. If I might use the most recent example. Who could ever believe that Johnny Damon would be a Yankee?

I like the fact that pride lets u kick and knee downd apponents but dont like the fact that they dont let u elbow to the head. the only rules i really agree with for both orginizations is no eye gouging, biting, pinching, small joing manipulation, groin shots, and sticking your finger in peoples cuts. I think everything else should go. This is supposed to be a real fight. Even though the fighters werent as talented in the begining I liked those fights better because they were more like a real fight.

Actually, I think Dana White is the one pushing for a pride vs. ufc.
He is the one who brought liddell over in 03 or 04 to try to get a match between liddell and silva.
More recently Pride pulled Wan out of a fight with liddell.
From what Ive been reading, White wants to mix up both organizations...

I started watching the UFC when it started and over the years it seems it has become more like the WWF then a true MMA organization. They fluff up their fighters to sell PPV. Recently started viewing the Pride FC and have become really impressed, love the tournament and the crads they give out for inaction. And I might be wrong, but it in Pride Fighters compete against everyone....love to see Matt HUghes or any other champ in UFC take on each other.

I have not watched the UFC for a few years and then I watched the last 3. I have always loved watching MMA, boxing and kickboxing.

This past weekend I watched the first 2 rounds of the recent Pride Bushido. The quality and skill level of the Pride Fighters is off the hook! There was way better standup and far better groundwork and reversals.

The best part was there were NO EARLY STOPPAGES! The last few UFC's had way too many early stoppages, often protecting the champions belt. A flurry of weak punches from a known striker or champ are all that is necessary to win a UFC bout. In Pride, a fighter is often taking a beating, only to take control of the match a minute later.

I'll continue watching UFC, because I love MMA and going to the pub to watch it with friends, but now I'm more excited to see Pride!

I tend to like Pride more too but I don't think they have the best fighters hands down.

Wanderlei Silva is dominating his class in Pride and has for a few years. When he was in the UFC he has a losing record. He got his ass beat down twice. And only had one win against a nobody

hughes, franklin and chuck can bang with the pride's top but i believe they are exceptions. plus some of ou are bringing up som pride fighters banging with ufc'ers when they were fairly early in their career and thas not wuite fair seeing as how they came into their prime during their pride tenure. id say on average the pride fighters are better though that may be due to a superior pool of talent worldwide. when we discuss the top fighters its a toss up though. i will say that when i can make a name for myself (just 2-0)i would accept a pride bid over ufc.

Iye your an idiot!!!! Did you see the 200,000$ pride fist in the center of the ring??? Not to mention a lazer light show worthy of the superbowl. Oh yeah don't forget the 2 mile long path way the fighters walk to get into the ring. Ever seen the UFC having 6 ring girls (ugly little japs by the way) Pure fighting my ass...
Oh yeah and they signed Tank Abbott a few years back! Thats a JOKE and a marketing ploy on Prides part! Far from a PURE fighting organization. Pride engages in the same BS as any other large organization. A true MMA fan can see throught the BS of both organizations and enjoy show!

------lolzzz, what a fuckin' idiot... this mrs. PC!! i watch both and all i can say is, UFC used to be great but its fastly becoming like the WWF wrestling crap! its a fuckin soap opera!! they even have all day marathons on the weekends!! 'nuff said!!

You Pride guys are a bunch of crackheads. I watch both promotions religiously, and the UFC wins hands down, not because of their fighters, but because of their marketing.

Why is the NFL and NBA so popular? The product isn't always the best, but the promotion of that product is what sells. No one does it better then the states, and I'm Canadian, so don't give me the yankee pride shit...

UFC and Pride each have their share of excellent fighters, and so not so excellent ones, but UFC has the best show, because they promote it the best.

Look at what their reality shows have done for fighters. They are always building up thier stable, training new guys, and giving second chances to old ones. TV time for these athletes builds the sport....

UFC is like WWE, in that they cover all of the small details for their production values. The big difference, the product is real, damn real! :D The cage rocks too. Who wants to see fighters fall through the ropes?? I hate that about pride.

Both promotions have great fighters, but UFC will be the ultimate promotion in the end, as they sell MMA better then anyone. The product alone isn't enough to sell a sport, any moron can see that....

/end rant....

P.S. How cool would a UFC vs Pride showdown be though??

very informative. ufc is cool but i have to say i like pride way better. seems like there not on the ground as much and more action in pride. and i bet fedor could waste anyone from ufc. and usually japan entertainment > usa entertainment i think you made an error about pride's penalties. you said they get a red card if a fighter(s) is stalling plus 10% pay deduction. i've seen them use green cards. and in other fights i seen them use yellow cards and 3 yellow cards is a DQ. i've only been into the sport for about a year though. it could have been different before i watched.

some of you people are dumbasses, just because someone didn't do well a couple years ago in a fight dosn't mean that their going to continue to be the same way, people evolve, and grow, and they learn, the more they fight, and the more they loose the harder they'll stand, and the harder it'll take to take them down everytime, that's how it goes, and for you people to not see that then your just totally blind and just looking at it from one blind angle.

I found this blog via google when I wanted to learn a bit more about the similarities and differences between the UFC and PRIDE.

As an Aussie, I have heard of both but was under the impression ( rightly or wrongly) that UFC is more like a raw version of the WWF, WWE or whatever they'll call themselves next - mainly due to the drama, trash talk and behaviour of the fighters inside and outside of the octagon.

While PRIDE is comparable to an MMA version of K1 - a more finished and refined product, thereby attracting a more professional and higher quality of fighters etc. I guess it's a bit like comparing the NBA (back when Bird, Jordan, Magic, Isaiah used to play) to Streetball And1 (or the NBA as it is today) - both supremely entertaining but not the same or level of professionalism.

Based on what I've seen, I believe my earlier impressions are, on the most part, valid. While the UFC started out being a sport for purist, it has since become more like a soap opera with the rantings and ravings of some of its superstars (i.e. Tito Ortiz etc.). Yes, PRIDE has its share of class-less acts (i.e. Ryan Gracie) but many would agree that PRIDE's calibre of fighters (which encapsulates their professionalism inside and outside of the ring) are higher. Just look at the way Cro Cop and Fedor carry themselves. There is a level of respect and maturity between PRIDE fighters that doesn't exist (or exhibit) itself in the UFC...a bit of a shame.

I hope that the MMA worlds of UFC and Pride will get together. Just like the history of the NFL. AFC vs NFL. I think that Pride has better fighters. The Pride fighting needs more market share in the US to compete with UFC in "America". However, as an American I feel that most of my of my country men only knows UFC and less of Pride, and some come to the assumption that UFC is the 'only'place for fighters.(Example, Only watching CNN and not Fox News) UFC announcers and UFC offical needs to stop saying at times before fights or even reporting them, that so and so, or this fight represents the "World Champion". Not so. It misleads the audiences. Pride is out there.

7:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

your just not right. if you follow both like you say you do then you have also looked at the independent world rankings. there is not one that is better than the other. you only have a style of show you like better. for exp. most of pride fighters have fouth both and vs versa,,,, randallman, wanderla silva, robby lawler, rampage, liddel and all have won and lost in both. you have to look at the fighters record and who they have fought to determine the best for exp. tito beat silva(wanderla),,,chuck beat tito,,,,diaz beat robby,,, robby beat dude from pride (p.s. robby fights in pride because has lost to many times in ufc) so my point is if your not looking at a certent fighter or if your preferance is pride i would not coment because it is not that cut and dry and you sound stupid

11:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You make some intresting points and until you made juvenile comments "stupid". I agree with you that you have to look at the individual fighters. However, you cannot make an assumption that individual fighters and event holders (in this case Pride and UFC) and two diffent entities. Fighters make contracts with Pride or UFC and they become one in representation of 'both' the fighter and event holders. Yes Tito is Tito but not with out UFC signiture. Fedor is Fedor but not without Pride promoting him also. Understand. What I want to see is a Super Brawl between all of the best that Pride has to offer and all of what UFC has to offer. To end all discussion. That we would have a true world champion(s).

4:47 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

According to some UFC fans Wanderlei Silva is overrated because he lost to Tito nearly 7 years ago, and Belfort nearly 9 years ago!!! But Chuck Liddell being defeated by Rampage (a average pride middleweight) 3 years ago was lucky!
Also people were saying that "CHUCKS A MUCH BETTER FIGHTER NOW" and rampage would not stand a chance if they fought again....

...Have any of you idiots considered that Wanderlei Silva is a much different fighter than he was 7 years ago!

It would be a great fight and I think that Silva would edge it.
But Shogun would beat them both!

Pride definatley has much better fighters. Outside of George St.piere, the champions in pride would own the top fighters in the UFC (in my opinion). By the way Pride has the best fighter on the planet Fedor Emelianenko (thats a fact). My man Fedor would destroy anyone the UFC could throw at him and pride for that matter.

I agree with you mark, Fedor is the real deal and would most likley take it to Arlovsky, like he does everyone. but how about fedor's brother alexander vs. arlovsky probly a pretty good fight. but hopfully this voice is heard by some one big trying to sell some big fights. not many pure UFC fans know about fedor, but bring him to America's eyes soon and he will be the next, Ali or jordan

pride is missing one thing. a cage. if pride had a fenced-in octagon, i would say it is the perfect mma organization. also you cant elbow as you can in ufc, but then again the fighters are so tough the bouts would probably be over too quick if pride fighters were allowed to elbow. it would almost take the fun out of it...
